The Moving Images GIG at UW Seattle

Focus of Inquiry

This Moving Images GIG (Graduate Interest Group) brings together students from a variety of departments focused on the study of moving images, including narrative and documentary film as well as television and new media.  The group allows graduate students to gather and discuss recent scholarship, prepare for and react to visiting scholars, and give and receive feedback about their own research. The group’s common fields of inquiry include film history and theory, aesthetics, moving image pedagogy, and changing conditions in media environments. Our overall goal is to develop and sustain research and pedagogical exchange about moving images.

Activities:

Each quarter, both UW’s interdisciplinary research cluster Moving Image Research Group and individual departments bring renowned speakers to campus. In preparation for these events, the GIG will meet to read and discuss the scholar’s recent work as well as screen relevant films or television programs (meetings will be conducted before and after the visit). Additionally, we will be complementing our ongoing critical interest in the moving image by organizing workshops and events that engage with the creative production and pedagogical application of media inside and outside the classroom. Our goal is to begin to cultivate a practical engagement with the moving image whose pedagogical import resonates with the community at large. By drawing on the rich experiences, knowledge, and talents of individuals and organizations associated with the University of Washington we hope to see the MIRG GIG develop into a springboard for partnerships that will form the basis for individual and group collaboration.  These collaborations include, but are not limited to, the various screening platforms such as the Northwest Film Forum in Seattle, the region’s first and only non-profit center for the film arts, that frequently invites filmmakers to introduce their work. Similar to preparing for campus visits and lectures, we plan to organize reading and screening sessions for these events.

We welcome new graduate student members from any department.

This Graduate Interest Group is supported by the Simpson Center for the Humanities.
